log and antilog Mirrored

The antilog curve by is the mirror image of logb x in the line y = x. Hover either curve to see a matching pair.

b^y (antilog) log_b x y = x
Where the Answer Lands on a Log Ruler

Each tick is the next power of the base. The integer part of y picks the interval and the fractional part slides the marker inside it.

The inverse logarithm calculator finds the number whose logarithm you already know. Enter the log value y and choose base 10, base e, base 2, or any custom base, and the calculator returns x = by, also called the antilog. It shows the answer in standard and scientific notation, splits a base-10 log into its characteristic and mantissa, and checks the result by taking the logarithm again. Very large and very small answers, such as 10500 or eโˆ’900, are handled without overflowing.

What is an Inverse Logarithm (Antilog)?

The inverse logarithm of y in base b is the number x = by. It answers the question: "which number has a logarithm of y?"

Logarithms and exponentials undo each other. Since logโ‚โ‚€ 1000 = 3, the antilog of 3 is 10ยณ = 1000. Since ln eยฒ = 2, the natural antilog of 2 is eยฒ โ‰ˆ 7.389.

  1. Common antilog: base 10, written 10y or antilog(y).
  2. Natural antilog: base e โ‰ˆ 2.71828, written ey or exp(y).
  3. Binary antilog: base 2, written 2y, used in computing and information theory.

Every whole step in y multiplies the answer by the base, and the fractional part supplies the leading digits.

The whole part of y becomes repeated multiplication by the base. The fractional part adds one last partial factor.

How to Calculate the Antilog Using Characteristic and Mantissa?

Split y into a whole-number characteristic and a decimal mantissa between 0 and 1. Look up the antilog of the mantissa, then move the decimal point by the characteristic.

  1. Characteristic: take the floor of y. For y = 2.4771 it is 2. For y = โˆ’1.3 it is โˆ’2, not โˆ’1.
  2. Mantissa: subtract the characteristic. For 2.4771 it is 0.4771; for โˆ’1.3 it is 0.7.
  3. Look up the digits: 100.4771 โ‰ˆ 3.000, found in an antilog table at row 0.47, column 7.
  4. Place the point: multiply by 10characteristic: 3.000 ร— 10ยฒ = 300.0.

Negative logs are often written in bar notation, such as 2.7 for โˆ’2 + 0.7 = โˆ’1.3. Its antilog is 5.012 ร— 10โˆ’2 = 0.05012.

How to Use This Inverse Logarithm Calculator?

Enter the logarithm value y, pick the base, and press "Calculate antilog."

1
Enter y

Any real number, positive or negative, including values like 1e3. The answer is always positive.

2
Choose the base

10 for common logs and pH, e for natural logs and growth, 2 for bits, or any positive base other than 1.

3
Read the result

Standard form, scientific notation, characteristic and mantissa, and the same value written in the other bases.

Choose the number of significant figures to match your data. Results beyond 10308 are still exact in scientific notation even though ordinary calculators overflow.

Natural Antilog ex and Continuous Growth

The natural antilog ex turns a natural log back into a quantity, and it is the formula for continuous growth and decay: A = Pยทert.

Taking ln of both sides gives ln(A/P) = rt, which is how you solve for a rate or a time. The inverse log then converts your answer back: if ln(A/P) = 0.6931, the growth factor is e0.6931 = 2, a doubling.

  • Finance: $1,000 at 5% compounded continuously for 10 years grows to 1000ยทe0.5 โ‰ˆ $1,648.72.
  • Radioactive decay: N = Nโ‚€ยทeโˆ’ฮปt, with half-life ln 2 / ฮป.
  • Population: a 2% continuous growth rate doubles a population in ln 2 / 0.02 โ‰ˆ 34.7 years.

Set a rate and a time. The exponent rt is the natural log of the growth factor, and its antilog is the factor itself.

Inverse Log in pH, Decibels and Earthquake Magnitudes

Many scientific scales are logarithms, so converting a reading back into a physical quantity is an inverse log.

  • pH: pH = โˆ’log[Hโบ], so [Hโบ] = 10โˆ’pH. Black coffee at pH 5 has 100 times more hydrogen ions than pure water at pH 7.
  • Decibels: L = 10ยทlog(I/Iโ‚€), so I/Iโ‚€ = 10L/10. A 30 dB increase means 1,000 times the sound intensity.
  • Earthquakes: energy grows by 101.5 โ‰ˆ 31.6 per magnitude step, so a magnitude 7 releases about 1,000 times the energy of a magnitude 5.
  • Star brightness: a difference of m magnitudes is a brightness ratio of 100.4m.

Pick a scale and move the reading. The inverse log shows how the physical quantity explodes or shrinks.

Antilog Rules: Turning Sums into Products

Because bp + q = bpยทbq, adding two logs and taking the antilog multiplies the original numbers. This is the idea behind log tables and the slide rule, which engineers used for multiplication for more than 300 years.

  • Product: antilog(p + q) = antilog(p) ร— antilog(q).
  • Quotient: antilog(p โˆ’ q) = antilog(p) รท antilog(q).
  • Power: antilog(kยทp) = antilog(p)k.
  • Root: antilog(p/n) = the n-th root of antilog(p).

To multiply 2.5 ร— 3.2 with logs: log 2.5 + log 3.2 = 0.39794 + 0.50515 = 0.90309, and antilog(0.90309) = 8.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about antilogs and exponentials

The common antilog of 2.5 is 102.5 โ‰ˆ 316.23. Split 2.5 into the characteristic 2 and the mantissa 0.5. The antilog of the mantissa is 100.5 โ‰ˆ 3.1623, and the characteristic shifts the decimal point two places, giving 316.23.

Yes, for the common (base 10) logarithm the inverse log of y is 10y. In general the inverse of logb is by, so the inverse of ln is ey and the inverse of logโ‚‚ is 2y.

Press SHIFT or 2nd, then LOG to get 10x, or SHIFT/2nd then LN to get ex. In Excel use =10^A1 or =POWER(10, A1) for base 10 and =EXP(A1) for base e. In Python use 10 ** y or math.exp(y).

The antilog of a negative number is a positive number between 0 and 1. For example, 10โˆ’2 = 0.01 and 10โˆ’0.3 โ‰ˆ 0.5012. The result is never negative or zero, because by > 0 for every real y.

Take the inverse log of the negative pH: [Hโบ] = 10โˆ’pH mol/L. A pH of 3.2 gives [Hโบ] = 10โˆ’3.2 โ‰ˆ 6.31 ร— 10โˆ’4 mol/L. Each drop of 1 pH unit means ten times more hydrogen ions.

exp(y) is the antilog for base e only, while antilog usually means base 10. exp(1) = e โ‰ˆ 2.71828 but antilog(1) = 10. Both undo their matching logarithm: exp undoes ln and antilog undoes log.

They let you find antilogs from a printed table that only covers mantissas from 0 to 1. The mantissa gives the digits of the answer, and the characteristic gives the position of the decimal point. This is why 102.5 = 316.2 and 10โˆ’1.5 = 0.03162 share the digits 3162.
